Harkness, Hazel Irene (Virtue) was born August 6, 1912 in <strong>Hanover</strong> and was the<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> Wilbur Johnston and Agnes Irene (Sherrard) Virtue. Hazel graduated from<br />
<strong>Hanover</strong> High School in 1930. She married Harvey Harkness and five children were<br />
born to this union: David Harkness, Sue (Harkness) Williams, Duane Harkness,<br />
Douglas Harkness, and Sandy (Harkness) Barnaby. They lived in De Kalb, Illinois.<br />
Hazel died on February 11, 1981 and is buried in Fairfield Memory Gardens Cemetery,<br />
De Kalb.<br />
Harkness, Jessie R. (Smith) was born January 6, 1903 in Blanding, Jo Daviess County<br />
and was the daughter <strong>of</strong> John <strong>Grant</strong> and Katherine “Kate” Elizabeth (Schalk) Smith.<br />
She married Daniel Boone Harkness on January 10, 1936 in Belvidere, Illinois. They<br />
raised three children: Jeanette Marie (Smith) Schaal, Betty Lou (Harkness) Harkness,<br />
and Robert “Bob” Lee Harkness. Jessie worked at the <strong>Hanover</strong> Woolen Mill for a<br />
number <strong>of</strong> years. Jessie died October 12, 1990 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.<br />
Harkness, John “Sonny” Morris was born July 13, 1915 in Neckwall, Montana and<br />
was the son <strong>of</strong> John Bently and Viola Irene (Morris) Harkness. His family later moved<br />
to <strong>Hanover</strong>. Sonny married Sophie Florence Grzelak on June 28, 1937 in Savanna and<br />
six children were born to this union: Marchette Lee (Harkness) Kisner, Rita Jean<br />
(Harkness) Resh, John Robert “Bob” Harkness, Catherine “Caye” Irene (Harkness)<br />
Carbine, Juanita Marie “Bootsie” (Harkness) Holmes, and James Gary Harkness. He<br />
worked for National Lock for a number <strong>of</strong> years and he and his wife Sophie operated the<br />
Brunswick Inn in Savanna for 12 years. Sonny died March 10, 1984 and is buried in<br />
Evergreen Cemetery.<br />
Harkness, Luella Mae (Sanderson) Patterson was born May 18, 1915 in Rodden, Jo<br />
Daviess County and was the daughter <strong>of</strong> Warren L. and Luella (Cook) Sanderson. She<br />
attended Black Country School and graduated from <strong>Hanover</strong> High School in 1933. Mae<br />
married Edward Raymond Patterson on November 29, 1934 in Galena and four children<br />
were born to this union: Robert “Bob” Leland Patterson, Judith “Judy” Lynn (Patterson)<br />
Vesely, Shirley Luella (Patterson) Dodson, and Richard “Dick” Raymond Patterson.<br />
Her husband Raymond died in 1980 and she married Harvey Chapman Harkness on<br />
March 6, 1982 in <strong>Hanover</strong>. This union gave Mae five stepchildren: David Harkness,<br />
Sue (Harkness) Williams, Duane Harkness, Doug Harkness, and Sandy (Harkness)<br />
Barnaby. Mae lived in rural <strong>Hanover</strong> most <strong>of</strong> her life. Mae died July 26, 2006 and is<br />
buried in Log Church Cemetery.<br />
Harkness, Sophie Florence (Grzelak) was born June 19, 1915 in Rockford, Illinois<br />
and was the daughter <strong>of</strong> Anthony and Katherine (Kornash) Grzelak. She married John<br />
“Sonny” Morris Harkness on June 28,1937 in Savanna and six children were born to this<br />
union: Marchetta Lee (Harkness) Kisner, Rita Jean (Harkness) Resh, John Robert<br />
“Bob” Harkness, Catherine “Caye” Irene (Harkness) Carbine, Juanita Marie “Bootsie”<br />
1(Harkness) Holmes, and James Gary Harkness. She was operator <strong>of</strong> the Kubee Hole<br />
Gift Shop in <strong>Hanover</strong> and the Brunswick Inn in Savanna. Sophie died December 27,<br />
1982 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.<br />
Harksen, Harold Louis was born May 21, 1903 in Clinton, Iowa and was the son <strong>of</strong><br />
Paul Nickolas and Ida J. (Kruse) Harksen. He graduated from Lyons High School in<br />
1920 and from the University <strong>of</strong> Iowa in 1925. Harold married Emma Grace Deimerly<br />
on April 18, 1933 in Goose Lake, Iowa and they had one son: Max Eugene Harksen.<br />
