She lived in <strong>Hanover</strong> for a few years. Her husband Jacob died February 18, 1958 and<br />
was buried in Chicago; on December 5, 1984 he was exhumed and reburied in<br />
Evergreen Cemetery. Irene died November 22, 1984 and is buried in Evergreen<br />
Cemetery.<br />
Stauss, John August was born August 28, 1895 in Thompson Township, Jo Daviess<br />
County and was the son <strong>of</strong> August and Helena “Lena” (Boettner) Stauss. He lived in<br />
rural <strong>Hanover</strong> for many years. John died September 5, 1980.<br />
Steele, Alta Irene (Miller) was born August 6, 1900 in Woodbine Township, Jo<br />
Daviess County and was the daughter <strong>of</strong> George Jason and Evalena (Bainbridge) Miller.<br />
She married George Albert Steele on March 23, 1921 in Dubuque and one son was born<br />
to this union: Eugene Clement Steele. They farmed in <strong>Hanover</strong> Township for many<br />
years. Alta died September 9, 1992 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.<br />
Steele, Clement Raymond was born in 1896 in rural <strong>Hanover</strong> and was the son <strong>of</strong><br />
George Edwin and Sarah Catherine (Watson) Steele. He graduated from <strong>Hanover</strong> High<br />
School in 1914. Clement was killed October 15, 1918 while serving with the U.S. Army<br />
in World War I.<br />
Steele, Eugene Clement was born April 1, 1937 in Dubuque, Iowa and was the son <strong>of</strong><br />
George Albert and Alta Irene (Miller) Steele. He graduated from <strong>Hanover</strong> High School<br />
in 1955. Eugene married Janice RosaLee Clarkson on February 11, 1956 in <strong>Hanover</strong><br />
and seven children were born to this union: Judy Yvonne (Steele) Beckett, John David<br />
Steele, Jerry Eugene Steele, James Allen Steele, and two infant daughters, and one son,<br />
who died in infancy. Eugene farmed his entire life in <strong>Hanover</strong> on the farm that his great<br />
grandfather homesteaded in 1856. Eugene died October 23, 2009 and is buried in<br />
Evergreen Cemetery.<br />
Steele, James Sterling Morton was born June 7, 1922 in <strong>Hanover</strong> and was the son <strong>of</strong><br />
Arthur Edwin and Minnie Elvira (Thomas) Steele. He graduated from <strong>Hanover</strong> High<br />
School in 1939. He was a World War <strong>II</strong> U.S. Army Veteran. James married April<br />
(Bowemen) Hess on October 5, 1950 in Louisville, Kentucky and six children were born<br />
to this union: Brian Sterling Steele, Kandee (Steele) Bartlett, Corinne (Steele) Guinn,<br />
Lynne (Steele) Tucker, Melody Aleise (Steele) Laharne, and Thomas Steele. April died<br />
January 10, 1977 in Madison, Wisconsin. James was a stationary engineer maintaining<br />
boilers for National Lock in Rockford for 30 years, retiring in 1983. He lived in Davis,<br />
Illinois for many years before moving to Indianapolis, Indiana where he died on March<br />
29, 1994. He is buried in Savanna Township Cemetery.<br />
Steele, Miriam Ruth (Jewett) was born August 4, 1913 in Clarksburg, West Virginia<br />
and was the daughter <strong>of</strong> Elmer Buel and Annette “Netta” Perlie (Watts) Jewett. She<br />
graduated from Proviso High School, Cicero, Illinois. Miriam married Howard William<br />
Bracken in March 1938 in Crown Point, Indiana and one son was born to this union:<br />
William Bracken. She married William Hugh Steele on October 10, 1942 in St. Louis,<br />
Missouri and one daughter was born to this union: Jean (Steele) Stenhouse. Miriam<br />
served in the Women’s Army Corps in 1943. The family lived in <strong>Hanover</strong> for a number<br />
<strong>of</strong> years. Miriam died November 15, 1994 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.<br />
Steele, Richard was born July 28, 1911 in <strong>Hanover</strong> and was the son <strong>of</strong> Arthur Edwin<br />
and Minnie Elvira (Thomas) Steele. He was married to Amie Shultis and they had four<br />
daughters. They lived in Janesville, Wisconsin. Richard died July 23, 1981 and is<br />
buried in Janesville.
