Eurocentrismo, política externa norte-americana e fundamentalismo islâmico no filme inglês Com as horas contadas
ABSTRACT
EUROCENTRISM, NORTH-AMERICAN POLITICS AND ISLA-
MIC FUNDAMENTALISM IN THE ENGLISH FILM DEADLINE
The main objective of this text is to discuss the representations of the Islamic
fundamentalism against the Eurocentrism, the petrodollars and the North-
American external politics, under the optics of an English reporter, in the
film Deadline (ING.,1988, directed by Richard Stroud) departing from the
hypothesis that the cultural, religious and racial differences are as important
in the construction of points of view as the economic, social and political
categories. We took as reference for our approach rehearsals by Barraclough
(1964), about Contemporary History; Genette (1976), about Narratology;
Michalek (1989), about the Arabians in the international cinema; and Said
(1996), about Critical Multiculturalism. This film reveals, among other things,
a differential in the representation of the Arabians: the old representation of
Arabia as an exclusive stage on an “exuberant sexuality” – almost always
associated to kidnapping, jealousy, revenge and slavery – gives place, in this
film, to the representation of perfidy, betrayal and revolts, very frequent
traces in most occidental movies that have Arabs as protagonists, coadjuvants
or secondary characters. This rehearsal is part of a research entitled “The
foreign correspondent in situations of intercultural communication in
the international cinema, 1968-1988”, developed between the years of
1998 and 2001 in the University of São Paulo and in the University of Texas
in Austin (USA), when we also analyze the following films: The Green
Berets (USA, 1968), The Year of Living Dangerously (AUST.,1984), The
Killing Fields (ING, 1982) and The Passenger (FR/ITA, 1975).
Key words: English Cinema – Eurocentrism – Islamic Fundamentalism
A título de epígrafe
todas as divindades.
