However, when used as general shielding, a series of flat steel and aluminium layers can be used and while Pasi<br />

uses aluminium sheet 1.5 mm thick and zinc-plated steel which is 1 mm thick he suggests using thinner sheets.<br />

He suggests using four layers of steel with a sheet of aluminium between the steel sheets and perhaps one or<br />

more layers of aluminium on the outside. Pasi’s main aim is <strong>to</strong> share this arrangement <strong>to</strong> allow people <strong>to</strong> make<br />

permanent magnet mo<strong>to</strong>rs. One arrangement which may well be worth trying out is <strong>to</strong> use the shielding <strong>to</strong> block<br />

the backward drag of ro<strong>to</strong>r magnets passing sta<strong>to</strong>r magnets, perhaps like this:<br />

With this arrangement, the South poles of the ro<strong>to</strong>r magnets are attracted <strong>to</strong> the exposed North poles of the sta<strong>to</strong>r<br />

magnets, causing the ro<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong> rotate. As soon as a ro<strong>to</strong>r South passes the sta<strong>to</strong>r North pole, the sta<strong>to</strong>r shielding<br />

blocks the reverse pull which would normally slow the ro<strong>to</strong>r down.<br />

We then have the repulsion of the North pole of the sta<strong>to</strong>r magnet and the North pole of the ro<strong>to</strong>r magnet. To<br />

block that, a short length of shielding is placed beside the north pole end of the ro<strong>to</strong>r magnet. It would probably<br />

be an advantage <strong>to</strong> run the sta<strong>to</strong>r north pole shielding over the <strong>to</strong>p and underside of the ro<strong>to</strong>r magnet <strong>to</strong> cause<br />

major magnetic blocking.<br />

This magnetic mo<strong>to</strong>r design is just a suggestion and has not yet been built and tested.<br />

The Twin Ro<strong>to</strong>r Suggestion<br />

When you are considering shielding magnets using iron or steel, you need <strong>to</strong> remember that fridge magnets stick<br />

<strong>to</strong> refrigera<strong>to</strong>rs because the refrigera<strong>to</strong>rs are made of steel. This demonstrates the fact that there is an attraction<br />

between magnets and iron or steel. Consequently, if a magnet is shielded with steel so that it blocks the whole of<br />

the magnetic field of the magnet, a second magnet will be attracted <strong>to</strong> that metal shielding material. At<br />

proposes the use of this feature of simple shielding in the construction of a magnet mo<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

He suggests using two ro<strong>to</strong>rs geared <strong>to</strong>gether. The ro<strong>to</strong>rs have magnets on them, but for the purposes of<br />

explanation, just one pair of magnets are shown here:<br />
