With fully charged batteries switched <strong>to</strong> the ‘boost’ setting, this unit puts out more light than a 100-watt<br />

incandescent bulb powered by the mains. Tested in daylight, that looks like this:<br />

Let me stress again, that these units are not difficult <strong>to</strong> build and they don’t call for any great knowledge of<br />

electronics.<br />

Alternatives:<br />

While the systems shown above are effective and reasonable cost, it is possible <strong>to</strong> make them more efficient.<br />

With battery packs of ten NiMh 1.2V AA cells, when fully charged, we get more than 13-volts, when we<br />

actually want 9-volts for effective lighting. We get this by using two transis<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> drop the voltage down <strong>to</strong> 9-<br />

volts. The current flow is about 135 milliamps and so, the voltage drop of 4-volts at that current flow is a<br />

power loss of 540 milliwatts, which is a significant percentage of the power used <strong>to</strong> generate the lighting.<br />

By arranging things in a different way, we can reduce that power loss very considerably, IF we don’t mind the<br />

user being involved in controlling the lighting level. We could do this by tapping in<strong>to</strong> our 10-battery pack and<br />

using an extra 3-way switch which allows us <strong>to</strong> start off with 8 batteries and when the voltage starts <strong>to</strong> drop,<br />

switch <strong>to</strong> 9 batteries as the extra fully-charged battery would make a major difference <strong>to</strong> the lighting. Then<br />

when the voltage of the 9 batteries starts <strong>to</strong> get low, the tenth battery can be switched in:<br />

Whether or not this is worth doing is a matter of opinion in spite of the longer and/or brighter lighting. With 8<br />

batteries in use, the power saving is 350 milliwatts and with 9 batteries the power saving is 175 milliwatts.<br />

The lighting power is 1215 milliwatts, so these represent 29% and 14.5% of that power. If it is decided <strong>to</strong> use<br />

this arrangement, then the battery boxes can be tapped with additional output wires connected between<br />

batteries 8 and 9 and between 9 and 10.<br />

The operational sequence would be:<br />
