shaped magnet having a rear side and generating a second magnetic field, the U-shaped magnet being<br />

positioned on the ro<strong>to</strong>r so that the rear side of the U-shaped magnet is apposite <strong>to</strong> the first and the second<br />

segments of the sta<strong>to</strong>r as the ro<strong>to</strong>r rotates about the ro<strong>to</strong>r axis, wherein an interaction of a portion of the second<br />

magnetic field directly adjacent <strong>to</strong> the rear of the U-shaped magnet with the first magnetic field causes the ro<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong><br />

rotationally oscillate about the axis of the rail; and a bearing assembly connecting the ro<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong> the sinusoidal<br />

groove around the rail, the bearing assembly converting the oscilla<strong>to</strong>ry motion of the ro<strong>to</strong>r about the rail <strong>to</strong><br />

unidirectional linear motion along the rail.<br />

The present invention is also directed <strong>to</strong> a mo<strong>to</strong>r providing unidirectional motive power comprising: a rail having a<br />

longitudinal axis and a helical groove running around a periphery of the rail, the helical groove having a predetermined<br />

pitch; at least one sta<strong>to</strong>r having a generally having a longitudinal line of demarcation located at about<br />

a midpoint of a surface of the sta<strong>to</strong>r, the surface of the sta<strong>to</strong>r being disposed generally equidistant from and<br />

parallel <strong>to</strong> the axis of the rail; at least one sta<strong>to</strong>r magnet attached <strong>to</strong> the surface of the sta<strong>to</strong>r, the sta<strong>to</strong>r magnet<br />

having a direction of magnetisation which rotates about a magnetic axis parallel <strong>to</strong> the line of demarcation with a<br />

predetermined pitch, thereby generating a first magnetic field having a substantially uniform magnitude along the<br />

magnetic axis and rotates around the magnetic axis with the pre-determined pitch of the sta<strong>to</strong>r magnet rotation; at<br />

least one ro<strong>to</strong>r having an axis aligned with the axis of the rail, the ro<strong>to</strong>r being connected <strong>to</strong> the rail so that the ro<strong>to</strong>r<br />

is free <strong>to</strong> rotate about the axis of the rail and slide along the rail, the ro<strong>to</strong>r including at least one U-shaped magnet<br />

generating a second magnetic field, the U-shaped magnet being positioned on the ro<strong>to</strong>r so that a portion of the<br />

second magnetic field directly adjacent <strong>to</strong> the rear side of the U-shaped magnet interacts with the first magnetic<br />

field of the sta<strong>to</strong>r magnet <strong>to</strong> cause the ro<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong> rotate about it’s axis; and a bearing assembly connecting the ro<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>to</strong> the helical groove, the bearing assembly converting the rotary motion of the ro<strong>to</strong>r about the rail <strong>to</strong> unidirectional<br />

linear motion along the rail.<br />

invention, there are shown in the drawings embodiments which are presently preferred. It should be unders<strong>to</strong>od,<br />

however, that the invention is not limited <strong>to</strong> the precise arrangements and instrumentalities shown. In the<br />
