Don draws attention <strong>to</strong> the fact that the cables used <strong>to</strong> connect the output of "L2" <strong>to</strong> the output of the board,<br />

connecting the s<strong>to</strong>rage capaci<strong>to</strong>rs on the way, are very high-voltage rated cables with special multiple coverings<br />

<strong>to</strong> ensure that the cables will remain sound over an indefinite period. It should be remarked at this point, that the<br />

outer 3" diameter coil used by Don, is not wound on a former, but in order <strong>to</strong> get higher performance at high<br />

frequencies, the turns are supported with four separate strips physically attached <strong>to</strong> the turns - the technique<br />

described later in this document as being an excellent way for home construction of such coils.<br />

Please bear in mind that the voltages here and their associated power levels are literally lethal and<br />

perfectly capable of killing anyone who handles the device carelessly when it is powered up. When a<br />

replication of this device is ready for routine use, it must be encased so that none of the high-voltage<br />

connections can be <strong>to</strong>uched by anyone. This is not a suggestion, but it is a manda<strong>to</strong>ry requirement,<br />

despite the fact that the components shown in the pho<strong>to</strong>graphs are laid out in what would be a most<br />

dangerous fashion were the circuit <strong>to</strong> be powered up as it stands. Under no circumstances, construct<br />

and test this circuit unless you are already experienced in the use of high-voltage circuits or can be<br />

supervised by somebody who is experienced in this field. This is a "one hand in the pocket at all times"<br />

type of circuit and it needs <strong>to</strong> be treated with great care and respect at all times, so be sensible.<br />

The remainder of the circuit is not mounted on the board, possibly because there are various ways in which the<br />

required end result can be achieved. The one suggested here is perhaps the most simple solution:<br />

The voltage has <strong>to</strong> be dropped, so an iron-cored mains-frequency step-down transformer is used <strong>to</strong> do this. To<br />

get the frequency <strong>to</strong> the standard mains frequency for the country in which the device is <strong>to</strong> be used, an oscilla<strong>to</strong>r<br />

is used <strong>to</strong> generate that particular mains frequency. The oscilla<strong>to</strong>r output is used <strong>to</strong> drive a suitable high-voltage<br />

semiconduc<strong>to</strong>r device, be it an FET transis<strong>to</strong>r, an IGBT device, or whatever. This device has <strong>to</strong> switch the<br />

working current at 8,000 volts, though admittedly, that will be a current which will be at least thirty six times lower<br />

than the final output current, due <strong>to</strong> the higher voltage on the primary winding of the transformer. The available<br />

power will be limited by the current handling capabilities of this output transformer which needs <strong>to</strong> be very large<br />

and expensive.<br />

As the circuit is capable of picking up additional magnetic pulses, such as those generated by other equipment,<br />

nearby lightning strikes, etc. an electronic component called a "varis<strong>to</strong>r" marked "V" in the diagram, is connected<br />
