Rotation of device 650 can be achieved by controlled, timed energising and de-energising of control coils 660,<br />

662, 666, 668, 678, 680, 686, and 688. Exemplary rotation is demonstrated with reference <strong>to</strong> the <strong>to</strong>p views of<br />

Figs.32A-32B which depict counterclockwise rotation of permanent magnet ro<strong>to</strong>r member 702 through onehundred<br />

and eighty degrees. In Fig.32A sta<strong>to</strong>r pole piece path portion 658A of component 651 is active and<br />

sta<strong>to</strong>r pole piece path portion 658B is not active, which may be achieved by energising control coil 660 in a<br />

permanent magnet magnetic flux aiding manner or by energising control coil 662 in a permanent magnet<br />

magnetic flux opposing manner. Sta<strong>to</strong>r pole piece path portion 676B of component 670 is active and sta<strong>to</strong>r pole<br />

piece path portion 676A is not active, which may be achieved by energising control coil 680 in a permanent<br />

magnet magnetic flux aiding manner or by energising control coil 678 in a permanent magnet magnetic flux<br />

opposing manner.<br />

Thus, portions 690 and 692 of permanent magnet ro<strong>to</strong>r member 702, which both have a north magnetic polarity,<br />

will be repelled by the north polarity of sta<strong>to</strong>r pole piece path portions 658A and 676B aligned with it. Portions 694<br />

and 696 of permanent magnet ro<strong>to</strong>r member 702, both of which have a south magnetic polarity, will be attracted<br />

<strong>to</strong> the active path portions 658A and 676B. At the instant that ro<strong>to</strong>r member portion 694 becomes aligned with<br />

sta<strong>to</strong>r pole piece path portion 658A, as shown in Fig.32B, all coils are de-energised such that all pole piece path<br />

portions will be active as shown. Pole piece path portions 658B and 676A are then kept active while pole piece<br />

path portions 658A and 676B are made inactive. This is achieved by energising control coils 662 and 678 in a<br />

permanent magnet magnetic flux aiding manner or by energising control coils 660 and 680 in a permanent<br />

magnet magnetic flux opposing manner. Ro<strong>to</strong>r member portions 690 and 692 will again be repelled by the north<br />

polarity of path portions 658B and 676A aligned with it so that rotation of permanent magnet ro<strong>to</strong>r 702 is<br />

continued.<br />

In Fig.32D all coils are shown de-energised when ro<strong>to</strong>r portion 692 aligns with pole piece path portion 658A. By<br />

continuing this timed sequence of energisation and de-energisation of the control coils, continued rotary<br />

movement is achieved. As explained above, the initial direction of rotation can be controlled by circuit means<br />
