Please bear in mind that should you modify a vehicle <strong>to</strong> run on hydrogen, either as an additive or as a<br />

replacement for petrol, you need <strong>to</strong> clear it with your insurance company before using it on a public road,<br />

otherwise, you will be driving without insurance since any alteration <strong>to</strong> the vehicle au<strong>to</strong>matically invalidates the<br />

insurance if the insurer is not notified and agrees the change. You may, of course, modify any stationary engine<br />

or any vehicle which you only run on private property. In the USA, the oil companies have influenced the local<br />

courts <strong>to</strong> such a degree that in some States, it is an offence <strong>to</strong> “run a vehicle on a non-approved fuel”.<br />

In passing, you may be interested <strong>to</strong> hear that I have been <strong>to</strong>ld that the Prohibition era in America had nothing at<br />

all <strong>to</strong> do with people drinking alcohol. The reality was that in the early days, Henry Ford was going <strong>to</strong> have his<br />

Model-T car running fuel-less by using a Nikola Tesla designed magne<strong>to</strong> system and an electric engine, but he<br />

was pressured in<strong>to</strong> using an internal combustion engine <strong>to</strong> burn the gasoline which was an unwanted component<br />

of the local oil industry. This caused a problem for people on long journeys as there were very few gasoline filling<br />

stations at that time. To overcome the problem, the early cars were set up so that they could run on either<br />

gasoline or on alcohol produced by some 50,000 farmers scattered around the country. When the oil industry<br />

discovered how profitable it was selling gasoline, they opened many gasoline filling stations. They then wanted <strong>to</strong><br />

exclude the farmers and have all of the profits for themselves and so Prohibition was introduced, not <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>p<br />

people drinking alcohol (although that was the pretext), but in reality, <strong>to</strong> shut down the 50,000 alcohol stills which<br />

were their competition. When the stills were gone, then Prohibition was dropped as it had achieved it’s goal of a<br />

vehicle fuel monopoly.<br />

The Electrolyser System of Paul Zigouras<br />

In his document, Moray King draws attention <strong>to</strong> the HHO cell design of the American, Paul Zigouras who became<br />

very well known in the year 2011 due <strong>to</strong> his cell design which is perfectly capable of running a 320 horsepower<br />

marine engine. Paul, at age thirty, had a his<strong>to</strong>ry of rebuilding marine engines and then selling them. He then was<br />

involved in helping a friend who had entered a competition for the car with the highest mpg performance. Paul<br />

found that by adding HHO <strong>to</strong> the air entering the car engine, that they could get 70 mpg on the flat when driving<br />

carefully. Their target was 100 mpg, and so they were disappointed by being 30 mpg short of their target.<br />

Paul decided <strong>to</strong> work on the HHO angle <strong>to</strong> see what could be achieved and enlisted the help of a friend and<br />

sometime freelance employee who was expert in electronics as Paul was not familiar with electronics. Probably<br />

without understanding the underlying causes, they managed <strong>to</strong> utilise several operating principles – cavitation,<br />

charged water gas clusters, resonance, mechanical vibration and a ‘splitting the positive’ style power supply. The<br />

overall result was spectacular, culminating in a small cell, in<strong>to</strong> which water could literally be hosed and only gas<br />

came out of the other end.<br />

Paul never revealed the exact circuit design and it is reported that he sold the rights <strong>to</strong> the design for US<br />

$6,000,000. The purchasers then contacted the eBay buyer of the latest version of Paul’s circuit board and paid<br />

$20,000 <strong>to</strong> buy it back. The eBay buyer was happy with the deal as he had paid just $1,100 for it and so made a<br />

profit of $18,900 on the deal. At this time of writing (2013) some eighteen months have gone by and it seems<br />

quite clear that the present owners of Paul’s circuit design have no intention whatsoever, of sharing or<br />

manufacturing the design and so it has been effectively shelved, never <strong>to</strong> be seen again. They were not<br />

interested in the cell, but just the electronics board.<br />

However, a number of things are known about the design, probably sufficient <strong>to</strong> allow a similar design <strong>to</strong> be<br />

produced. These items are as follows:<br />

Paul made units in two sizes. The smaller version had between 20 and 30 plates each being 2-inches (50 mm)<br />

wide and 8-inches (200 mm) long, material 316L-grade or 318L-grade stainless steel one sixteenth of an inch<br />

thick (1.6 mm), stacked with a gap of just 0.635 mm between them. This small version could blast 2.5 (US)<br />

gallons of water per minute in<strong>to</strong> gas, which is about 17,500 litres of gas per minute. The water was hosed in at<br />

one end, and no water reached the far end, which is quite spectacular performance.<br />

The larger cell had 36 plates 3-inches (75 mm) wide and 10-inches (254 mm) long, also 316L or 318L-grade<br />

stainless steel 1.6 mm thick and with a gap of 0.635 mm between the plates. That size of cell could convert water<br />

<strong>to</strong> gas at the rate of 5 (US) gallons per minute (35,000 litres of gas per minute)<br />

The techniques used with these cells is nothing at all like any of the various other electrolyser designs discussed<br />

in this chapter. This is because the cell operation is nothing like conventional electrolysis or even like DC pulse<br />

driven water splitting as used in the Stan Meyer “Water Fuel Cell”<br />

Firstly the plates are grit-blasted with 60-grade silicon carbide at an angle of 45 degrees <strong>to</strong> the face of the plate,<br />

making sharp-edged craters in the surface of the plate. When water is forced through the very narrow gap<br />
