art represented by our patents related <strong>to</strong> PAGD devices.<br />

The effect of the vacuum in the T/R gap tube seems <strong>to</strong> be dual. By transforming the corona discharge in<strong>to</strong> a<br />

normal glow discharge, it increases the local production of pho<strong>to</strong>ns (probably associated <strong>to</strong> the formation and<br />

discharge of metastable states in the plasma), and at the same time, increases the pulse rate in the output circuit<br />

and thus, in all probability, the energy injected in the T/R gap cavity. But this did not yet permit us <strong>to</strong> confirm<br />

whether or not it is "latent heat" energy of the plasma molecules which is being tapped at the receiver plate, even<br />

if it be plausible in principle that plasmas may effect more efficient transfer of "latent heat" <strong>to</strong> tuned receivers than<br />

atmospheric gases.<br />

The vacuum dependency of the pulse rate of the PAGD reac<strong>to</strong>r employed as example in the secondary circuit<br />

downstream from the divider is also rather well marked, with the fastest pulse rates being registered at 1 Torr for<br />

the sample run shown in Table 5 below.<br />

It is worth noting here that the illustrated polarity of the wiring of the PAGD reac<strong>to</strong>r tube, as shown in Fig.14, is<br />

best for purposes of sustaining regular au<strong>to</strong>-electronic emission at high voltage. The reverse configuration, with<br />

the centre electrode negative and the plates positive favours instead heating of the cathode and a lapse in<strong>to</strong> a<br />

normal glow discharge.<br />

We tested a similar arrangement <strong>to</strong> that shown in Fig.14 above, but with a PAGD mo<strong>to</strong>r circuit (see our U.S. Pat.<br />

No. 5,416,391). A split-phase mo<strong>to</strong>r 44 replaces the rectifier and charge pack, and the PAGD reac<strong>to</strong>r is operated<br />

at the same pressure of 15 Torr, as shown in Fig.15. The T/R gap tube tested had a longer plate distance (2''),<br />

with one plate now functioning as Transmitter and the other as Receiver. Note also the different wiring of the<br />

PAGD reac<strong>to</strong>r. The results, as shown below in Table 6, present pulse per second (PPS) and mo<strong>to</strong>r revolutions<br />

per minute (RPM) curve trends that appear <strong>to</strong> be analogous and parallel <strong>to</strong> the well known Paschen curves for<br />

breakdown voltage in vacuum - such that the T/R gap performs better either in the atmospheric corona discharge<br />

mode, or in the high vacuum normal glow discharge (NGD) mode, than in the low breakdown voltage range of the<br />

curve where the discharge forms a narrow channel and takes on the appearance of an "aurora" transitional region<br />

discharge (TRD).<br />
