T. J. Chorister in America has used a Ro<strong>to</strong>verter style circuit for some time now. He uses a 200V 3-phase<br />

electric mo<strong>to</strong>r driven by a single-phase 120V 60 Hz mains. He says: The hot wire goes direct <strong>to</strong> one phase, and it<br />

also goes through a ‘run’ capaci<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong> the second phase, also thru an induc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong> the 3rd phase. You have <strong>to</strong><br />

experiment with the values of the capici<strong>to</strong>r and induc<strong>to</strong>r in order <strong>to</strong> get the smoothest running of the mo<strong>to</strong>r. Often<br />

you will not even need a switched starting capaci<strong>to</strong>r. Generally, a one-horsepower mo<strong>to</strong>r will output about threequarters<br />

of a horsepower. However, the arrangement will be much more efficent than a single phase mo<strong>to</strong>r. The<br />

neutral is not needed, but be sure <strong>to</strong> use a ground connected <strong>to</strong> the frame of the mo<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

Run capaci<strong>to</strong>rs pass about 1-amp for each 22 microfarads of its capacity and so they act as current limiters when<br />

in series in an AC circuit. Induc<strong>to</strong>rs should have wire which is thick enough <strong>to</strong> carry the current needed by the<br />

mo<strong>to</strong>r. I have no guidelines for induc<strong>to</strong>rs, so just try it (if you can measure one leg of the mo<strong>to</strong>r winding, then that<br />

would be about right for the induc<strong>to</strong>r). The induc<strong>to</strong>r value is adjusted by trial and error until you find the value<br />

where the mo<strong>to</strong>r runs most smoothly.<br />

If a starting capaci<strong>to</strong>r is needed, then just parallel a starting capaci<strong>to</strong>r and switch and connect a bleeder resis<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong><br />

the run capaci<strong>to</strong>r. The circuit is like this:<br />

The Ro<strong>to</strong>Verter output and the Muller Mo<strong>to</strong>r/Genera<strong>to</strong>r output (and possibly, the Adams Mo<strong>to</strong>r output) can be<br />

increased very substantially by a technique developed by "Kone" the modera<strong>to</strong>r of the EVGRAY Yahoo forum<br />

already mentioned. The technique is <strong>to</strong> place a dead short-circuit across each output coil, just as the magnetic<br />

field of that coil reaches a maximum. This is done five times in rapid succession and can boost the output power<br />

by an estimated fac<strong>to</strong>r of 100 times.<br />
