1. Eight batteries switched in: variable light control.<br />

2. Nine batteries switched in: variable light control.<br />

3. Ten batteries switched in: variable light control.<br />

4. Boost switch closed: fixed lighting level as batteries discharge <strong>to</strong> their minimum level.<br />

Each of these switched levels gives a new lease of life <strong>to</strong> the lighting system, but it does require the<br />

intervention of the user, although that intervention is very minor.<br />

It does not matter whether it is the Plus end of the battery chain, or the Minus end which is switched. The<br />

way that the battery boxes are constructed, actually make it more convenient <strong>to</strong> make the two extra<br />

connections at the Minus end of the stack:<br />

Medical usage<br />

The applications of the solar desk lamp shown above are intended for home or office use. There is one<br />

other serious lighting requirement and that is for doc<strong>to</strong>rs working in isolated rural areas, far from any<br />

electrical grid but also, very far from fuel supplies for running a conventional genera<strong>to</strong>r which is the only<br />

known option for most of them. For example, it can take a doc<strong>to</strong>r two days of travelling <strong>to</strong> get some more<br />

genera<strong>to</strong>r fuel. If we apply a slight alteration <strong>to</strong> the desk lamp and sacrifice the long period of lighting, we<br />

could boost the light output from 1000 lux right up <strong>to</strong> 2,700 lux for an hour or two of very brightly lighting. I<br />

can see no reason why two or three of those would not give more than adequate light for night time<br />

emergency surgery when placed on stands or suspended from the ceiling. Being self-contained and mobile,<br />

an assistant could hold and aim one <strong>to</strong> illuminate exactly where the light is needed.<br />

The basic solar desk lamp operates off seven 1.2V batteries in series. Eight batteries in series would boost<br />

the light level <strong>to</strong> 1730 lux at the cost of much higher current draw and reduced period of lighting. Increasing<br />

the batteries <strong>to</strong> nine would raise the light level <strong>to</strong> a massive 2,700 lux with a current draw so high that there<br />

might only be lighting for perhaps one hour, but that doesn’t matter in an emergency where a life could be<br />

saved. To achieve this emergency level of lighting all that is needed is an ordinary 4-way rotary switch which<br />

replaces the On/Off switch as it can do that job as well, otherwise the construction remains identical. The<br />

arrangement could be like this:<br />
