And <strong>to</strong> make matters ‘worse’ the primary winding wire is just 9 inches (228.6 mm) long and the secondary just<br />

36 inches (914.4 mm) long, the primary being wound directly on <strong>to</strong>p of the secondary. Not exactly a large or<br />

expensive construction and yet one which appears <strong>to</strong> perform adequately in actual tests.<br />

This is a very compact form of construction, but there is no necessity <strong>to</strong> use exactly the same former for coils,<br />

nor is there anything magic about the nine-inch length of the L1 coil, as it could easily be any convenient<br />

length, say two feet or 0.5 metres, or whatever. The important thing is <strong>to</strong> make the L2 wire length exactly four<br />

times that length, cutting the lengths accurately. It is common practice <strong>to</strong> match the weight of copper in each<br />

coil and so the shorter wire is usually twice the diameter of the longer wire.<br />

The circuit above, produces a cold electricity output of high voltage and high frequency. The voltage will not be<br />

the same as the neon transformer voltage, nor is the frequency the same either. The two coils resonate at their<br />

own natural frequency, unaltered by any capaci<strong>to</strong>rs.<br />

3. The next step is <strong>to</strong> get the high voltage down <strong>to</strong> a more convenient level, perhaps, like this:<br />

Here, an identical transformer, wound in exactly the same way, is used in reverse, <strong>to</strong> start the voltage lowering<br />

sequence. The wire length ratio is maintained <strong>to</strong> keep the transformer windings resonant with each other.<br />

Supposing we were <strong>to</strong> wind the L2 coil of this second transformer in a single straight winding and instead of<br />

winding just one L1 winding on <strong>to</strong>p of it, two or more L1 identical windings were placed on <strong>to</strong>p of it – what would<br />

happen?:<br />

Now for a comment which will seem heretical <strong>to</strong> people steeped in the present day (inadequate) level of<br />

technology. The power flowing in these transformers is cold electricity which operates in an entirely different<br />

way <strong>to</strong> hot electricity. The coupling between these coils would be inductive if they were carrying hot electricity<br />

and in that case, any additional power take-off from additional L1 coils would have <strong>to</strong> be ‘paid’ for by additional<br />

current draw through the L2 coil. However, with the cold electricity which these coils are actually carrying, the<br />

coupling between the coils is magnetic and not inductive and that results in no increase in L2 current, no matter<br />

how many L1 coil take-offs there are. Any additional L1 coils will be powered for free. However, the position of<br />

the coils relative <strong>to</strong> each other has an effect on the tuning, so the L1 coil should be in the middle of the L2 coil,<br />

which means that any additional L1 coils are going <strong>to</strong> be slightly off the optimum tuning point.<br />
