Be very careful with this circuit as it can kill you. This circuit is only for experienced experimenters.<br />

Capaci<strong>to</strong>rs will take about a day <strong>to</strong> get conditioned. This circuit is good for bringing dead car batteries back <strong>to</strong> life.<br />

When a battery is conditioned and the charging circuit input power is switched off, the battery will continue<br />

charging ! Once they are conditioned, you can charge 4 car batteries in parallel using just a 6 watt 12 volt power<br />

supply, or a solar panel. However, this description must not under any circumstances be considered <strong>to</strong> be a<br />

recommendation that you should actually build this circuit as this presentation is for information purposes only.<br />

The question has been asked, “why use five capaci<strong>to</strong>rs in series when any one of them can easily handle the<br />

voltage being used?” That is a good question as the answer is not at all obvious. The answer is because of the<br />

way that capaci<strong>to</strong>rs charge up. The voltage across a capaci<strong>to</strong>r which is being charged, increases in a very<br />

non-linear way and it is generally illustrated like this:<br />

The red lines show the average rate of charge and the steeper the line, the faster the rate of charge. The greater<br />

the charging voltage relative <strong>to</strong> the size of the capaci<strong>to</strong>r, the steeper the start of the line is. Howerd uses this fact<br />

<strong>to</strong> his advantage by using just the first ten percent of the curve. This is done by connecting several high-voltage<br />

capaci<strong>to</strong>rs in series as shown in his circuit diagram. The combined set of capaci<strong>to</strong>rs charge up very fast indeed<br />

and before they reach 10% of their capacity the neon fires and the capaci<strong>to</strong>r charge is driven in<strong>to</strong> the battery (or<br />

capaci<strong>to</strong>r) which is being conditioned. The intensity of that current is determined by the size of the capaci<strong>to</strong>rs in<br />

the chain, the larger the capaci<strong>to</strong>rs the more intense the pulse in<strong>to</strong> the battery and as you can see, Howerd has<br />

chosen 2.2 microfarad capaci<strong>to</strong>rs of the plastic film type:<br />

The Tesla Switch.<br />

The Tesla Switch is covered in more detail in Chapter 5, but it is worth mentioning it again here as it does perform<br />

battery charging. The similarity ends there, because the Tesla switch does the battery charging while the circuit is<br />

providing serious current in<strong>to</strong> a load. Also, the Tesla switch uses only four batteries, and still is capable of driving<br />

a thirty horsepower mo<strong>to</strong>r, which is the equivalent of 22 kilowatts of electrical power.<br />
