the circuitry will apply equally well <strong>to</strong> a battery-powered version. If running from a battery or a bank of batteries<br />

and high voltage is wanted, then an off-the-shelf inverter can be used <strong>to</strong> generate the high voltage used for the<br />

mains supply.<br />

If you would like <strong>to</strong> test the operation of the circuit and the design generally, here is a stripboard layout which<br />

might be used:<br />

The preset resis<strong>to</strong>rs are high power units looking like this:<br />

These are adjusted with a flat screwdriver inserted in<strong>to</strong> the slot at the end of the shaft although they could have a<br />

knob attached. It takes ten full turns of the shaft <strong>to</strong> move across the full range of the resis<strong>to</strong>r. If you are adjusting<br />

the Mark-Space ratio and the ratio goes up when you turn the shaft <strong>to</strong> the left but want that <strong>to</strong> happen when you<br />

turn the shaft <strong>to</strong> the right, then just swap over the wires going <strong>to</strong> the outermost terminals of the resis<strong>to</strong>r and that<br />

will reverse the effect when you turn the shaft. You can stick the base of the resis<strong>to</strong>r directly <strong>to</strong> the stripboard<br />

using "Impact" Evostick or any similar adhesive and that will hold it securely but still allow you <strong>to</strong> prise it off the<br />

board at a later date if you should need <strong>to</strong>.<br />

There is no need <strong>to</strong> use knobs as the circuit will be set up, adjusted for best performance and then left un<strong>to</strong>uched.<br />

The circuit can be built using stripboard like this:<br />
