oadcast band – say, 1500 kHz – and adjust the trimmer capaci<strong>to</strong>rs on variable capaci<strong>to</strong>r C1a/C1b <strong>to</strong> get the<br />

loudest signal.<br />

Trimmer capaci<strong>to</strong>r C2 should then be adjusted for the best selectivity and volume over the entire broadcast band.<br />

Finally, Coils L1 and L4 can be moved <strong>to</strong> their optimum positions by sliding them backwards and forwards over<br />

coils L2 and L3. If a nearby station interferes with the reception of a weaker station, tune the slug of L2 <strong>to</strong> get<br />

minimum interference. For loudspeaker operation, simply unplug the earphone. Strong local stations should be<br />

received at fair volume.<br />

How It Works: The receiver employs a double-tuned circuit feeding a crystal diode voltage-doubler/detec<strong>to</strong>r<br />

which drives a small loudspeaker. Radio frequency signals picked up by the antenna system are induced in<strong>to</strong> coil<br />

L2 from coil L1. The desired signal is selected by the tuned circuit C1a/L2 and coupled through capaci<strong>to</strong>r C2 <strong>to</strong> a<br />

second tuned circuit C1b/L3, which improves the selectivity by narrowing the radio frequency bandpass. The<br />

twice-tuned signal is then induced in<strong>to</strong> coil L4 from coil L3.<br />

The positive half of the radio frequency signal appearing across L4, passes through the 1N34A germanium diode<br />

D2 <strong>to</strong> charge capaci<strong>to</strong>r C4. The negative half of the signal passes through diode D1 <strong>to</strong> charge capaci<strong>to</strong>r C3. The<br />

polarity of the charges on C3 and C4 are such that the effective voltage is doubled. This voltage appears across<br />

the primary of output transformer T1 which converts the high-impedance signal <strong>to</strong> a low-impedance output suited<br />

<strong>to</strong> the loudspeaker.<br />

While this looks like a very good design for a crystal set, the fact that it is insisted that the coil pairs must be<br />

mounted at right angles <strong>to</strong> each other raises an interesting parallel with the work which states that if the highfrequency<br />

excitation field is at right angles <strong>to</strong> the output coil, then there will be a free-energy inflow in<strong>to</strong> the circuit<br />

from the local environment. Perhaps this crystal set design gains extra power <strong>to</strong> drive it’s loudspeaker from an<br />

inflow of environmental energy.<br />

Lawrence Tseung’s Self-Powered “FLEET” Genera<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

The "FLEET" ("Forever Lead-out Existing <strong>Energy</strong> Transformer") device is a self-powered electrical genera<strong>to</strong>r<br />

which has no moving parts and which can be constructed cheaply. It has been developed by a Hong Kong based<br />

team of people: Mr Lawrence Tseung, Dr. Raymond Ting, Miss Forever Yuen, Mr Miller Tong and Mr Chung Yi<br />

Ching. It is the result of some years of thought, research and testing and it has now reached an advanced stage<br />

of testing and demonstration and is nearly ready for commercial production.<br />

Mt Tseung has applied his "Lead-out" theory <strong>to</strong> the category of low-power circuits known as the "Joule Thief"<br />

circuits. These circuits originated with an article by Mr Z. Kaparnik, in the "Ingenuity Unlimited" section of the<br />

November 1999 edition of the "Everyday <strong>Practical</strong> Electronics" magazine.<br />

The initial circuit allowed the very last energy <strong>to</strong> be drawn from any ordinary dry-cell battery, and used <strong>to</strong> light a<br />

white Light-Emitting Diode ("LED") for use as a small <strong>to</strong>rch. It allows a battery which is considered <strong>to</strong> be fully<br />

discharged, <strong>to</strong> drive the circuit until the battery voltage drops right down <strong>to</strong> 0.35 volts. The initial circuit uses a bifilar<br />

coil wound on a ferrite ring or "<strong>to</strong>roid". Bi-filar means that the coil is wound with two separate strands of wire<br />

side by side, so that each adjacent turn is part of the other coil. A coil of that type has unusual magnetic<br />

properties. The Joule Thief circuit is like this:<br />
