Briefly, in one aspect the engine of the present invention includes a head having a generally concave depression<br />

in it, the head defining one end of a chamber, a pis<strong>to</strong>n having a generally semi-<strong>to</strong>roidal depression in its upper<br />

surface, the pis<strong>to</strong>n defining the other end of the chamber, and a plurality of electrodes extending in<strong>to</strong> the chamber<br />

for exciting and igniting the working fluid. The pis<strong>to</strong>n can move along its axis <strong>to</strong>wards and away from the head,<br />

causing the volume of the chamber <strong>to</strong> alter, depending on the position of the pis<strong>to</strong>n relative <strong>to</strong> the head.<br />

In another aspect, the engine of the present invention includes a head which defines one end of the chamber, a<br />

pis<strong>to</strong>n which defines the other end of the chamber, a plurality of magnetic coils wound around the chamber for<br />

generating magnetic fields inside the chamber, and at least four electrodes extending in<strong>to</strong> the chamber for<br />

exciting and igniting the working fluid. The magnetic coils are generally coaxial with the chamber. The electrodes<br />

are generally equidistantly spaced from the axis of the chamber and are each normally positioned 90 degrees<br />

from the adjacent electrodes. Lines between opposed pairs of electrodes intersect generally on the axis of the<br />

chamber <strong>to</strong> define a focal point.<br />

In a further aspect, the engine of the present invention includes a head which defines one end of a chamber, a<br />

pis<strong>to</strong>n which defines the other end of the chamber, at least two electric coils wound around the chamber for<br />

generating magnetic fields inside the chamber, and a plurality of electrodes extending in<strong>to</strong> the chamber for<br />

exciting and igniting the working fluid. The electric coils are generally coaxial with the chamber. And the working<br />

fluid includes a mixture of inert gases.<br />

The apparatus of the present invention for preparing a mixture of inert gases for use as a fuel includes a chamber,<br />

electric coils for generating predetermined magnetic fields inside the chamber, tubing adapted <strong>to</strong> be connected <strong>to</strong><br />

sources of preselected inert gases for flow of the gases from the sources <strong>to</strong> the chamber, and ionisers for ionising<br />

the gases.<br />

The fuel of the present invention includes a mixture of inert gases including approximately 36% helium,<br />

approximately 26% neon, approximately 17% argon, approximately 13% kryp<strong>to</strong>n, and approximately 8% xenon by<br />

volume.<br />
