desired inductance, and finally, the charging voltage can be regulated by increasing or decreasing the number of<br />

turns in the secondary winding of the transformer or by varying the diameter of the wire used in the coil. In order<br />

<strong>to</strong> obtain a better efficiency from alterna<strong>to</strong>r 42, it is convenient <strong>to</strong> use the resonance coil or adjustable inductive<br />

resis<strong>to</strong>r 43. By so doing, it is possible <strong>to</strong> adjust the resistance in order <strong>to</strong> obtain a state of resonance in the circuit,<br />

and in that state, the current produced by the alterna<strong>to</strong>r will be in phase with the impressed E.M.F., therefore the<br />

effective watts will be a maximum in the primary and secondary circuits.<br />

The variable resis<strong>to</strong>r 29, which is placed in the circuit which connects each battery with mo<strong>to</strong>r 27-28, is used <strong>to</strong><br />

adjust the current of the discharging battery <strong>to</strong> a fixed value, since it is important <strong>to</strong> obtain a constant number of<br />

revolutions per second of the alterna<strong>to</strong>r 42.<br />

The commuta<strong>to</strong>r is also provided with voltmeters 56 and 57, and by means of the switches 58 and 59, the circuits<br />

connecting both poles of each battery, can be closed and the voltage of the discharging current may be<br />

determined when desired. Finally, by means of switch 60 connected across the terminals of the apparatus 40 and<br />

41, the apparatus may be switched off when not required.<br />

It is easy <strong>to</strong> understand the whole operation of this mechanism. Suppose initially that battery 1-2 has been<br />

charged and that cylinder 5 has been rotated <strong>to</strong> the position shown in the drawing. Battery 1-2 will immediately<br />

discharge via battery terminal 23, ammeter 22, wire 21, contacts 17-18, wire 26, mo<strong>to</strong>r 27-28, variable resis<strong>to</strong>r 29,<br />

wire 30, rotary transformers 40 and 41, (or through any other apparatus which may be used instead of those<br />

transformers in order <strong>to</strong> use part of the current flowing from the battery), pole 39, and commuta<strong>to</strong>r path 9-12,<br />

through which the whole discharging circuit is closed.<br />

As a result of this discharge from the battery, the electrical power produced will be dissipated in three ways: A<br />

first part is wasted in overcoming the internal resistance of the various components in the circuit. A second part is<br />

used <strong>to</strong> power the DC mo<strong>to</strong>r 27-28, and the third part powers the apparatus connected <strong>to</strong> poles 31-39 of the<br />

commuta<strong>to</strong>r, that is, the useful equipment powered in addition <strong>to</strong> the running of the system.<br />
