The exact wire length ratio of the turns in the "L1" and "L2" coils gives them an almost au<strong>to</strong>matic synchronous<br />

tuning with each other, and the exact resonance between them can be achieved by the positioning of the "L1" coil<br />

along the length of the "L2" coil. While this is a perfectly good way of adjusting the circuit, in the 1994 build shown<br />

in the pho<strong>to</strong>graph, Don has opted <strong>to</strong> get the exact tuning by connecting a capaci<strong>to</strong>r across "L1" as marked as "C"<br />

in the circuit diagram. Don found that the appropriate capaci<strong>to</strong>r value for his particular coil build, was about 0.1<br />

microfarad (100 nF) and so he connected two 47 nF high-voltage capaci<strong>to</strong>rs in parallel <strong>to</strong> get the value which he<br />

wanted. It must be remembered that the voltage across "L1" is very high, so a capaci<strong>to</strong>r used in that position<br />

needs a voltage rating of at least 9,000 volts. Don remarks that the actual capaci<strong>to</strong>rs seen in the pho<strong>to</strong>graph of<br />

this pro<strong>to</strong>type are rated at fifteen thousand volts, and were cus<strong>to</strong>m made for him using a "self-healing" style of<br />

construction.<br />

Don has also connected a small capaci<strong>to</strong>r across the "L2" coil, and that optional component is marked as "C2" in<br />

the circuit diagram and the value used by Don happened <strong>to</strong> be a single 47nF, high-voltage capaci<strong>to</strong>r. As the two<br />

halves of the "L2" coil are effectively connected across each other, it is only necessary <strong>to</strong> have one capaci<strong>to</strong>r for<br />

"L2":<br />

There are various ways of dealing with the output from the "L2" coil in order <strong>to</strong> get large amounts of conventional<br />

electrical power out of the device. The method shown here uses the four very large capaci<strong>to</strong>rs seen in the<br />

pho<strong>to</strong>graph. These have an 8,000 or 9,000 volt rating and a large capacity and they are used <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>re the circuit<br />

power as DC prior <strong>to</strong> use in the load equipment. This is achieved by feeding the capaci<strong>to</strong>r bank through a diode<br />

which is rated for both high voltage and high current, as Don states that the device produces 8,000 volts at 20<br />

amps, in which case, this rectifying diode has <strong>to</strong> be able <strong>to</strong> handle that level of power, both at start-up when the<br />

capaci<strong>to</strong>r bank is fully discharged and "L2" is producing 8,000 volts, and when the full load of 20 amps is being<br />

drawn.<br />

This capaci<strong>to</strong>r bank is fed through a diode which is rated for both high voltage and high current, as Don states that<br />

the device produces 8,000 volts at 20 amps, in which case, this rectifying diode has <strong>to</strong> be able <strong>to</strong> handle that level<br />

of power, both at start-up when the capaci<strong>to</strong>r bank is fully discharged and "L2" is producing 8,000 volts, and when<br />

the full load of 20 amps is being drawn. The actual diodes used by Don happen <strong>to</strong> be rated at 25 KV but that is a<br />

far greater rating than is actually needed.<br />
