do your own checking as designs change from year <strong>to</strong> year. At the present time, solar panels are only about<br />

17% efficient which means that 83% of the power reaching them does not go <strong>to</strong> make electricity.<br />

Solar panels expand due <strong>to</strong> heat during the day and so need <strong>to</strong> be mounted in such a way that allows for this<br />

expansion and contraction during the day and night. As you don't want <strong>to</strong> over-charge a battery, it is<br />

generally considered essential <strong>to</strong> use a control circuit <strong>to</strong> prevent this happening. In real life, when you use<br />

the electricity generated on a daily basis, there is little or no chance of over-charging, but you can decide this<br />

for yourself.<br />

One recent development is <strong>to</strong> use the solar panel(s) <strong>to</strong> drive a battery-pulsing charging system. This has the<br />

major advantage that battery charging does not s<strong>to</strong>p when the light falling on the panel produces a voltage<br />

which is <strong>to</strong>o low <strong>to</strong> charge the battery bank directly. With a pulsing unit, the charging pulse voltage is largely<br />

independent of the input voltage and so a good charging rate can be produced in poor lighting conditions,<br />

including twilight. This can extend the battery charging period very substantially, especially in winter when<br />

there is less light. At this time, one of John Bedini’s companies is offering these units for sale.<br />

Assessing solar panels generally from the standpoint of knowing what the snags are, unless you live in a<br />

very good location on the planet and have a good deal of spare money <strong>to</strong> spend, then they are not a great<br />

solution, but this is something which you also need <strong>to</strong> decide for yourself.<br />

However, having said that, a scheme has recently been introduced in the UK and it appears <strong>to</strong> be a realistic<br />

option. Under this scheme, the householder does not buy the solar panels but merely pays <strong>to</strong> cover the cost<br />

of installing them. For example, this house:<br />

has twenty-one panels mounted on the roof and the <strong>to</strong>tal cost <strong>to</strong> the home owner was just £500. The home<br />

owner receives a very much reduced electricity cost and expects <strong>to</strong> recover the installation cost within two<br />

years. Even in November at latitude 52 degrees North, these panels are performing well. No batteries are<br />

involved and the panels tie in directly <strong>to</strong> the electricity grid.<br />

Not having <strong>to</strong> pay for the purchase of the panels themselves makes an enormous difference <strong>to</strong> the viability of<br />

such an installation. I understand that the strategy behind this scheme is <strong>to</strong> increase the presently tiny<br />

percentage of electricity in the UK, which is produced from renewable sources, by offering people a scheme<br />

which actually makes it worthwhile <strong>to</strong> have an installation.<br />

Solar panels can be very useful items in spite of their very low efficiency and high cost. When thinking about<br />

solar panels people generally imagine a set of many large solar panels mounted on the roof of a house. The<br />

cost of doing that is far <strong>to</strong>o great for most people <strong>to</strong> consider it. However, at this time, there are one billion<br />

people in the world who do not have any electricity at all. It appears that a useful electricity feature for them<br />
