Not published. 26.5 Environmental Benefits Concerning NiCd Batteries, the amount of batteries (including those in appliances) put on the market in Germany decreased from 1,967 tonnes in 2003 to approximately 1,253 tonnes in 2007. 568 In 2007 this equates to 4 % of the total amount of portable batteries put on the market in Germany. It seems quite unlikely that this decrease has been significantly influenced by the Battery Decree, as this offers no incentives for consumers to change consumption habits. The decrease in market share of the NiCd batteries does appear to be due more to technological innovations, although producers may have been becoming more aware of the desire to see significant reductions in cadmium in batteries under the Batteries Directive. Experience in the UK, where not equivalent to the German Regulations were in place (refer to Section 25.0), seems to supports this. The waste stream in 2007 was composed of 82% primary batteries and 18% secondary batteries (see Figure 26-2). In 2007, as in the year before, almost 1.5 billion portable batteries were put into circulation (33,000 tonnes). The collection rate achieved was 43% and the recycling rate achieved was 38% (see Figure 26-3). Of the 13,645 tonnes of portable batteries entering GRS sorting plants in 2007, 8% were disposed of (92% recycling efficiency) compared to 81% (19% recycling efficiency) in 1999 (see Figure 26-3). 569 160,000 collection sites are run by the GRS, of which 140,000 are retail outlets. The data in Figure 26-3 shows that 47% of portable batteries collected by GRS came from collections at retail outlets, 23% from waste collection local authorities and 30% from industry.
