Diane Roos mentions in the electronic periodical Retail 612 the following figures on the
evolution of markets for single use and for rechargeable batteries for 2007:

� In 2007 more than 22 million single use batteries were sold in Belgium. These
were mostly alkaline batteries (only 115,000 zinc-carbon batteries were sold);
� The market for single use batteries shows a slight decline of – 4.8% in volume
terms. By value, the market increased by 3.1%;
� The total Belgian market for single use batteries is 38.5 million euro;
� The market for rechargeable batteries is clearly growing (by 8.1%) in value;
and
� The total Belgian sales of rechargeable batteries are 6.51 million euro.
These figures do not necessarily indicate the success of the eco-tax since this may
reflect trends for which the eco-tax alone was not responsible. No figures on the
Belgian market evolution of disposable cameras has been found.
