For this reason, as of 1992 sport has been included among the several areas
which have undergone ecology-related assessment, as was seen at the Olympic
Centennial Congress, which took place in Paris in 1994. In the course of that
event, the International Olympic Committee - IOC considered the environmental
implications of sport activities as one of the main problems of the Olympic
Movement. The 1995 UN-Klimakonferenz in Berlin is a good example among the
international conventions that have been dedicated to other more ecologically
sensitive areas, such as the climate and biodiversity.
This book is inserted in this ongoing assessment process whose benchmark
was the 1992 Rio Declaration, and it attempts to establish a theoretical foundation
as well as an analysis of the experiences concerning environmental protection in
the field of sport. Thus, we aim not only to keep up with the generation of
knowledge, but also to define the concept of a desirable “sustainable” management
of sport, a challenge with which sport organizations in general will have to cope
in the next few years.
Such intents were also based on the ISO 14000 series (Sept. 1994), a set of
standards developed by the Swiss-based International Standard Organization,
which will regulate the relationship between business firms and organizations in
general and the environment in the next few decades. In this case, the progressive
incorporation of sport organizations within the scope of international
standardization can be expected.
The ISO 14000 Standards are specifically related to environmental protection
and they are expanded in documents (implementation procedures, concepts,
standards of reference, audits, etc.) which are produced in accordance with the
experience of the different countries which have subscribed to the ISO system.
Having undergone a trial period with the participation of a number of European
business firms and governmental organizations, the first ISO 14000 Standards will
be made available in the course of 1996.
Thus, this book provides an opportunity to establish the preliminary conditions
for the standardization of sport “production” and “consumption” with regard to
the currently evident ecological demands on sport activities, not only when they
occur on snow, or in lakes, beaches, and forests, but also when they are related
to the impact produced by large-scale facilities, as is the case of national, continental,
and Olympic games.
Regardless of subscribing or not to the ISO system, sport organizations,
especially the IOC, international federations, and national organizations are
beginning to consider alternatives involving self-control and standardization in
view of their increasing involvement in environmental conflicts. This trend has
emerged in a variety of events which were dedicated to the environment-sport
