this collection started out from the concept of a city, the human body, a changing
culture, and knowledge in their thematic approach of nature instead of inverting
that order as can be observed in the usual ecological studies of sport. Since the
ecological perspective is not a self-containing fact, the purpose of this second
stage of the book is to relate the environment-sport theme to the different
mutations which are taking place in sport activities. In short, on account of its
being more conceptual than theoretical, the second chapter rounds out the
objectives of the first. The third chapter provides more examples and facts about
the historical background for the sake of comparison with the theses and concepts
in the first two chapters.
After the presentation of the essential thematic guidelines of this book, chapter
four consists of a direct and objective intervention in the criticism and conflict in
which the relationship between sport and nature is markedly involved. The issues
raised here are complemented in chapter five, which draws ethical definitions
into the discussion. Broadly speaking, chapters four and five establish the basic
content of the book, whereas the first three chapters introduce the discussion
and provide a framework for future investigations.
The sixth and last chapter represents a repository of solutions to ecological
concerns connected with sport, among which are research, the mediation between
management and policy, the praxis of environmentally correct Olympic Games,
and the mobilization of institutions and scientists in the redefinition of sport
activities. In short, chapter six regards the experiences which are currently in
progress, thereby contributing to the generation of benchmarks for the
standardization or re-conceptualization of sport in the future at the discretion of
sport organizations, governments, business firms and individual citizens in the
years to come.
Finally, it seems fit to quote the first principle of the 1992 Rio Declaration,
which legitimates the production of this book by proposing the general goal of
“establishing a new and equitable global partnership through the creation of new
levels of cooperation among States, key sectors of societies and people, working
towards international agreements which respect the interests of all and protect
the integrity of the global environment and developmental system, recognizing
the integral and interdependent nature of the Earth, our home.”
