CONCLUSIONS
Overall, the hierarchy developed by respondents in the last section suggests
that a more active and participatory role is the profile expected to be assumed by
the IOC. In retrospect, both the IOC and the WFSGI during the 1990s have been
seeking for legitimacy as referred to their respective areas of intervention, namely
international sport organisations and global markets.
However, in terms of the environment and sport the major concern on
performances and standards is entering in the new frame of reference changing
the focus from reactive to proactive policies. In other words, international sport
leaders and managers are substituting their search of legitimacy for interventions
in environmental issues by collective building capacity of social and ethical
governance. Should it be the case that they are loosing their original conflictresolution
profile and developing their own perspectives for environmental
interventions? Are they moving towards a self-interest institutional ethics leaving
behind the mutually co-operative governance promoted by the Agenda 21?
