International trends of sport
and environment - a 2001 overview
Keynote Speaker
THE STATE OF KNOWLEDGE
This paper re-examines issues of the environment and sport relationships through
a consideration of profiles and perspectives, as proposed by the central theme of
this Congress. To begin, I would like to remark that the conflict-resolution approach
is still dominant today in the field of knowledge explored by the present session.
This notion has been particularly holding true in terms of ethics and management
focuses. And its concern was mirrored in the last World Conference on Sport and
the Environment ( Rio de Janeiro, October 1999), promoted by the International
Olympic Committee - IOC, when the major focus of interest was forwarded as the
commitments searched by the Agenda 21 descriptive procedures and by the
prescriptive statements favouring environmental sound sport practices. Table 1
depicts the preferred themes of presentations of that 1999 Conference within
which the categories “Agenda 21 implementation and governance” and “ Ethics,
behaviour and governance” reach altogether 29.7 % of speakers’ preferences.
The association of both policy and behavioural claims was respectively followed
by institutional assessments and directions ( “Reports and future perspectives”:
27.0% ), instrumental developments ( “Management, procedures and standards”:
24.3% ) and culturally enhancing approaches ( “Events and promotion” and
“Education and Culture” ) with 18.9 % of the presented papers.
