Olympics. This became the first time in history that the Olympics assumed a
positive pseudonym, “the Green Games”. (27)
Further, the phrase “environmental showcase” was officially coined by the
Norwegian Government. The LOOC proceeded to develop a “green profile” by
means of coordinated project for the management of the environment and sport
under the auspices of unified concept. The expertise was provided by Sigmund
Haugsjaa, a physical educator with connections in the environmental and Olympic
movements, who challenged apparently conflicting interests in order to obtain
the best possible Olympics for the environment. (28)
The improvement was evident at virtually all athletic venues in Lillehammer. As
a result, the expressions “the greening of sports”, “the third dimension of the
Olympics” and even “eco-correct sports” (29) become synonymous with the
Lillehammer experience.
This noticeable advancement may be represented by the renewal of
Lillehammer’s natural and cultural settings with their intangible qualities usually
unremarked in regular planning from previous Olympics. Summarizing here follows
key guidelines adopted by LOOC: (30)
(a) All building must reflect a simply design, conform to the aesthetic and
ecological prescription of the landscape, and use natural materials such as wood
and stone as well as traditional colors.
(b) Unity and coherence in environmentally friendly design and construction.
(c) Permanent buildings conforming to local architectural traditions, while
temporary structures reflect the unique visual profile of the Games.
(d) Ceremonial elements expanding on Northern lights, ice and snow, crystal,
reinforcing the aesthetic unity of the Games.
(e) An individual visual profile for each Olympic sub-site, often centred on one
key or “signal” building or facility, easily identifiable into overall style of the
Games.
(f) Energy saving facilities, consuming at least 30 per cent less energy than
similar premises.
(g) Control and early warning routines for food and water supply; prevention or
reduction of waste in the first place as well as was separation at source; recycling
of materials and energy.
