Aim:<br />

To evaluate the effectiveness <strong>of</strong> the pre-admission visit for children<br />

(and their parents) who are scheduled to have day surgery.<br />

Method: This was an evaluative study. Data was collected from 15<br />

parents who had attended the pre admission visit using a<br />

questionnaire specifically designed for this study.<br />

Analysis: Data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social<br />

Science (SPSS) and thematic analysis.<br />

Findings: Pre-admission access to the paediatric ward and theatre<br />

department enhanced the perioperative experience for both the child<br />

and their parents.<br />

Conclusion: Results <strong>of</strong> this evaluation study indicate that the preadmission<br />

visit is very successful in terms <strong>of</strong>: knowledge gained<br />

preparation for the hospital experience, reduction <strong>of</strong> anxiety and<br />

parent and child satisfaction.<br />
