Aim:
To evaluate the effectiveness of the pre-admission visit for children
(and their parents) who are scheduled to have day surgery.
Method: This was an evaluative study. Data was collected from 15
parents who had attended the pre admission visit using a
questionnaire specifically designed for this study.
Analysis: Data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social
Science (SPSS) and thematic analysis.
Findings: Pre-admission access to the paediatric ward and theatre
department enhanced the perioperative experience for both the child
and their parents.
Conclusion: Results of this evaluation study indicate that the preadmission
visit is very successful in terms of: knowledge gained
preparation for the hospital experience, reduction of anxiety and
parent and child satisfaction.
