essential for stroke recovery, and there was impatience when<br />

experiencing slower progress. Significant relationships with<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionals were identified as those in which knowledge was<br />

shared and patients were enabled to work towards rehabilitation<br />

goals. Patterns <strong>of</strong> working by staff can impact on the perceived<br />

empowerment <strong>of</strong> stroke survivors.<br />

Conclusions<br />

The recommendations from this study support the need for greater<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> the unique experience <strong>of</strong> stroke, and for the<br />

rehabilitation approaches to care to be extended over the 24-hour<br />

day.<br />
