Background and context<br />

The key to effective pain control for patients is pain assessment.<br />

The pain assessment process should facilitate the use <strong>of</strong> nursing<br />

skills to effectively communicate with patients. Education shapes<br />

knowledge and attitudes to ensure that patients are believed. This<br />

process must be supported by systematic documentation to ensure<br />

accurate communication with the patient/client and health care<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.<br />

Aim <strong>of</strong> the study<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> the study is to evaluate the attitudes <strong>of</strong> healthcare staff<br />

towards pain and its assessment.<br />

Methodology including research design and sampling<br />

200 questionnaires were distributed using an attitude assessment<br />

scale with 33 variables. 167 questionnaires were returned from<br />

Nurses.<br />

Analysis<br />

The majority <strong>of</strong> respondents agreed with the commonly held views<br />

concerning 19 <strong>of</strong> the 33 attitude statements. These 19 statements<br />
