Introduction<br />

The demand for clinical placements for nursing students is<br />

increasing exponentially. At the same time the rapid turnover <strong>of</strong><br />

qualified staff within the NHS continues to gather pace which has<br />

the potential to diminish the quality <strong>of</strong> mentorship and supervision<br />

<strong>of</strong> students in practice. The effects <strong>of</strong> these phenomena have led to<br />

a debate surrounding the efficacy and effectiveness <strong>of</strong> simulated<br />

practice learning, driven in part by Higher Education Institutions<br />

(HEIs) providing undergraduate nursing programmes and by<br />

providers <strong>of</strong> clinical placements in both primary and secondary care<br />

settings. In light <strong>of</strong> this the <strong>Nursing</strong> and <strong>Midwifery</strong> Council (NMC)<br />

called on <strong>School</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> and <strong>Midwifery</strong> to bid for pilot projects<br />

with a view to developing standards for the use <strong>of</strong> simulation for up<br />

to 10% <strong>of</strong> programme practice hours. The standards were to be<br />

piloted across a number <strong>of</strong> programme providers, with the Council<br />

<strong>of</strong> Deans and other stakeholders involved with the NMC in<br />

developing and piloting the standards. This paper describes the<br />
