are unnecessary “busy work”).<br />

Conclusion and Implications: This is probably the first study <strong>of</strong><br />

its kind to be completed in the Republic <strong>of</strong> Ireland. Therefore, the<br />

findings are significant and relevant to nurses and the nursing<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ession in this country. Creating a climate that <strong>of</strong>fers interesting<br />

and challenging work and where employees are informed, involved,<br />

and respected is no doubt a major challenge for all managers.<br />

Nevertheless, it is incumbent on them to design and implement<br />

strategies that will promote a climate high in humanistic thrust,<br />

esprit, and intimacy and low in alo<strong>of</strong>ness, disengagement, and<br />

hindrance within their organisations.<br />
