will focus on particular instruments, phases <strong>of</strong> the experience or<br />

symptoms. Authorship credits will go to the person(s) preparing a<br />

report. Team members will be acknowledged.<br />

In summary, this presentation discussed methodological problems<br />

in the planning, implementation and dissemination phases <strong>of</strong> a<br />

complex clinical study. The problems and their resolution included:<br />

Planning Phase:<br />

Melding academic-clinical researchers into an effective, smoothly<br />

functioning team.<br />

Giving equal attention to the experience and expertise <strong>of</strong><br />

academicians and clinicians.<br />

Aiming both to improve patient care and to test theoretical bases<br />

for the intervention.<br />

Sequencing and ordering several multi-item research instruments<br />

Producing training materials<br />

Implementation Phase:<br />

Recruiting and training (and replacing, training) research team<br />

members including certification in human subjects protection<br />

Recruiting and retaining research subjects<br />

Differentiating control/intervention groups<br />

Collecting, communicating, storing data<br />

Intra-team communications<br />

Researcher-subject communications<br />

Post-completion Phase:<br />

Data analysis<br />

Interpretation <strong>of</strong> results in view <strong>of</strong> study aims<br />

Communication <strong>of</strong> study results<br />

Inclusion <strong>of</strong> research team members in dissemination <strong>of</strong> study<br />

results.<br />

The identification and resolution <strong>of</strong> methodological problems is<br />

necessary for the continuation and improvement <strong>of</strong> clinical nursing<br />

research to improve patient care outcomes.<br />
