Background and context<br />

Second year pre-registration, undergraduate degree Intellectual<br />

Disability, Mental Health and General <strong>Nursing</strong> students in the <strong>School</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> and <strong>Midwifery</strong> <strong>of</strong> an Irish University are examined in<br />

biological sciences using multiple choice question (MCQ) format and<br />

written format.<br />

Both exams comprise knowledge based questions (not case<br />

histories or problem solving).<br />

Aim <strong>of</strong> the study<br />

To explore the use <strong>of</strong> multiple choice questions versus written<br />

questions in the assessment <strong>of</strong> second year student nurses<br />

undertaking biological science.<br />
