ward and the daily organisation <strong>of</strong> duties and tasks performed by<br />

nurses. The significant findings <strong>of</strong> this study have implications for<br />

nursing practice, education and research. This study reveals a need<br />

for psychiatric nurses to become more involved in<br />

psychotherapeutic ward programmes and less involved with<br />

organisational aspects <strong>of</strong> the ward. In absence <strong>of</strong> research on<br />

nurse-patient interactions within an Irish context, this study<br />

respectively suggests further exploration <strong>of</strong> the complexities within<br />

our health care environment and its impact on the delivery <strong>of</strong><br />

patient care.<br />
