between smoking, alcohol and substance use in a new and strange<br />

environment must be considered. The relevance <strong>of</strong> religious beliefs<br />

and practices in maintaining wellbeing and health and recovering<br />

from illness and their relationship to social integration cannot be<br />

underestimated. Maintaining a positive ethnic identity through links<br />

with home and Irish culture has enabled Irish migrants deal with<br />

the harshness <strong>of</strong> their lives in Britain over many decades. It is<br />

equally important that contemporary migrants to Ireland feel able to<br />

value and maintain their own heritage while learning the culture <strong>of</strong><br />

the wider Irish community.<br />
