Each study participant had successfully completed a degree at level<br />

8 or 9 <strong>of</strong> the national qualification framework (National Qualification<br />

Authority <strong>of</strong> Ireland, 2003).<br />

Analysis<br />

Data was analysed employing descriptive and inferential statistics<br />

using SPSS.<br />

Findings<br />

This study supports the value and function <strong>of</strong> degree studies in the<br />

empowerment <strong>of</strong> nurses’ careers, preparation <strong>of</strong> nurses for practice,<br />

the procurement <strong>of</strong> promotion and the improvement <strong>of</strong> practice and<br />

enhancement <strong>of</strong> patient care. This study also identified barriers to<br />

nurses’ pursuit <strong>of</strong> degree studies and nurses translation <strong>of</strong> new<br />

knowledge, skills and attitudes into practice.<br />
