BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT:<br />

There have been many influential publications in Ireland that have<br />

altered the education process and development <strong>of</strong> children’s<br />

nursing. None was more influential than the Commission on <strong>Nursing</strong><br />

(1998) which 8years later has seen the commencement <strong>of</strong> an<br />

Integrated Children’s and General <strong>Nursing</strong> undergraduate degree<br />

programme.<br />

AIM OF THE PAPER:<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> this presentation is to confront and explore the<br />

complexities <strong>of</strong> developing and implementing an Integrated<br />

Children’s and General <strong>Nursing</strong> undergraduate degree programme.<br />

SUMMARY:<br />

The development and implementation <strong>of</strong> the Integrated Children’s<br />

and General <strong>Nursing</strong> undergraduate degree programme has<br />

provoked many challenges for its nurse lecturers. One demand <strong>of</strong><br />

the new programme was the mammoth development <strong>of</strong> the<br />

curricula taking into consideration the ideals <strong>of</strong> EU (1977) and WHO<br />

directives and An Bord Altranais Standards (2005). The integration<br />

<strong>of</strong> both Children’s and General <strong>Nursing</strong> content has become a<br />

balancing act and one which necessitates delivery <strong>of</strong> content in<br />

equal parts. While sharing the content <strong>of</strong> other BSc peers from the<br />

different strands, students on the integrated programme must<br />

undertake paediatric theory modules. Lecturers endeavour to<br />

incorporate elements <strong>of</strong> both children’s and general nursing care<br />

into their teaching in order to balance and maximise the students<br />

learning. While this strategy has been adopted it has proved<br />
