Background and Context: This project is relevant to the conference<br />

theme as it is expanding the research area <strong>of</strong> international health<br />

education. Findings <strong>of</strong>fer suggestions for future curriculum<br />

development and identify an area <strong>of</strong> education that few schools <strong>of</strong><br />

nursing have in their curriculum.<br />

Canada has one <strong>of</strong> the most culturally diverse populations in the<br />

world today and having effective cultural assessment skills is an<br />

essential component <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional nursing practice.<br />

Aim <strong>of</strong> the Study: To explore the effect <strong>of</strong> experiences in an<br />

international clinical setting on students’ perceptions <strong>of</strong> their<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional nursing practice.<br />

Methods: A two phase research project. Phase one consisted <strong>of</strong> an<br />

examination <strong>of</strong> retrospective information collected by the primary<br />

investigator over a period <strong>of</strong> seven years as part <strong>of</strong> the debriefing<br />

on students’ return to Canada. Phase two was a prospective<br />
