This paper addresses the resolution <strong>of</strong> methodological issues that<br />

arose as a collaborative research team developed and implemented<br />

a clinical study. This federally funded study entitled: “Efficacy <strong>of</strong><br />

Nurse Coaching to Aid Ambulatory Surgery Patients”<br />

(#R15NR05174-01A1) with Dorothy Jones as principal investigator<br />

was completed in 2006. The broad purpose <strong>of</strong> this research was to<br />

conduct a randomized clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness <strong>of</strong> a<br />

Nurse- Coached Intervention delivered by telephone beginning on<br />

the first surgical evening and at 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours<br />

following arthroscopic ambulatory surgery. The intervention was<br />

planned to be effective in:<br />

1. Promoting cognitive and emotional processing<br />

2. Relieving symptom distress<br />

3. Improving overall functional health status during the recovery<br />

process.<br />

The research team members came from two institutions:<br />

perioperative nurses from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH),<br />
