Aim: This paper presents an overview <strong>of</strong> research on postnatal<br />

depression conducted with postnatal women only.<br />

Search and review methodology: Databases searched included<br />

those relevant to nursing, medicine, psychology and allied health<br />

over the past ten years. Criteria used for inclusion were research<br />

publications pertinent to prevalence rates, experiences <strong>of</strong> mothers<br />

living with postnatal depression, treatments and their efficacy.<br />

Seminal papers relevant to these areas published prior to this time<br />

were also included. The words postnatal and postpartum are used<br />

interchangeably throughout the international literature and for the<br />

purpose <strong>of</strong> this paper they are used synonymously.<br />

Analysis: Research spanning three areas is reviewed namely:<br />

prevalence, mothers’ experiences and treatments.<br />

Summary <strong>of</strong> key findings: The review shows prevalence rates to<br />

vary from 4.4% to 73.7% with the most recent systematic review<br />

suggesting a rate <strong>of</strong> 13%, indicating a serious clinical issue for<br />

nurses providing postnatal care to mothers. Mothers’ experiences <strong>of</strong><br />

living with postnatal depression exemplify such feelings as<br />
