� Phase 1:<br />

o (a) All end <strong>of</strong> programme evaluation forms (520) over a<br />

three year period<br />

o (b) Convenience sample (24)<br />

� Phase 2:<br />

o The sample for questionnaire distribution represented a<br />

total population <strong>of</strong> 568 preceptors and 310 students from<br />

the programme area being evaluated.<br />

Analysis:<br />

Phase 1: Thematic analysis<br />

Phase 2: Descriptive analysis carried out using SPSS version 14.0.<br />

Summary <strong>of</strong> Key Findings:<br />

The characteristics <strong>of</strong> a preceptor from an Irish perspective were<br />

explored. Student and preceptor comments were compared. Close<br />

agreement regarding important preceptor characteristics were<br />

highlighted. Key differences regarding the perception <strong>of</strong> preceptor<br />

demonstration <strong>of</strong> these characteristics were identified.<br />

Conclusion:<br />

Preceptors play an invaluable role in nurse education. An<br />

understanding what student nurses’ view as important and how this<br />

reflects or differs from the perception <strong>of</strong> the preceptor will assist in<br />

developing preceptorship in the clinical learning environment.<br />
