to wear on top. In this view, overall meaning<br />

of is ‘dyed garment’ (Katō, Yamada), and<br />

senses such as ‘sudden’ and ‘die’ are loan usages.<br />

In contrast, Shirakawa attributes a ritualistic<br />

significance, considering ‘die’ to be the main<br />

meaning of this graph, based on it originally<br />

showing an upper garment for a dead person,<br />

with the element showing a cord for tying;<br />

a similar type of garment was later worn also<br />

by low-ranking servants and soldiers. In Shirakawa’s<br />

treatment, the sense ‘sudden’ appears<br />

(‘fine thread’ > ‘small’), part of Yamada’s analysis.<br />

Yamada treats here as both semantic and<br />

phonetic, meaning ‘come later, follow’, to give<br />

‘small/young ones who follow children’, i.e.<br />
