Bronze forms show some variation. Figure<br />

in Form A is taken to show person with<br />

legs apart to indicate running while waving<br />

arms, with143 ‘stop’ in its original sense<br />

‘foot’ written three times, giving overall<br />

meaning ‘run fast’. Bronze form B seems to<br />

be person standing legs astride, waving,<br />

beneath which there is not but (NJK;<br />

‘vegetation, grass’) acting here as phonetic<br />

with associated sense ‘hurry’, also giving<br />

‘run fast’ as overall meaning. Upper part of<br />

seal form corresponds to (CO; ‘young, die<br />

young’), a graph originally showing a figure<br />

with the added feature of a tilted head, and<br />

has the lower element , again as phonetic.<br />

Clerical forms show transitional stage: trend<br />

is already to have at the top, not , and<br />

at least one clerical occurrence is almost<br />

bronze makes it hard to tell what was meant<br />

to be originally depicted, and analyses differ<br />

markedly. Taken variously as a sail (Qiu),<br />

a frame for putting soil in to pound firm<br />

(Ogawa), and a bowl (Katō, Gu, Shirakawa).<br />

Katō suggests in OBI/bronze the bowl is<br />

shown on its side (different orientation can<br />

be found in OBI and bronze), while Gu takes<br />

it to be a bowl on legs or a stand. At the<br />

seal stage, changed markedly in shape;<br />

this seems hard to explain as entirely due<br />

to stylization. Clerical script occurrences<br />

vary, but the shape can already be seen.<br />
