‘bird’ between upper and lower elements<br />

of ‘clothing’, here in sense of ‘cover’ 444),<br />

meaning ‘bird flies off/about to fly off’;<br />

beneath there is 2003 ‘hand’, giving the<br />

overall meaning ‘bird flies off out of the hand’<br />

(Katō), or ‘covered bird about to flap wings<br />

and escape’ (Gu). The seal form has the three<br />

elements , 56 ‘big’, and; interpretations<br />

of this combination differ. In all cases<br />

is taken as ‘bird’, and as ‘hand’, but in<br />

one view here is taken as ‘person’ (Tōdō),<br />

while another analysis takes as phonetic<br />

with associated sense ‘get loose’ (Katō), and<br />

alternatively again is taken as an abbrevia-<br />

tion of as in the bronze form (Gu). Ogawa,<br />

for his part, interprets and as making<br />

up one compound part of , i.e. 奞 ‘bird flaps<br />

its wings’. Despite these various differences,<br />

overall meaning of the seal form is still typically<br />

considered to be ‘bird flies off out of the<br />

hand’, though Mizukami notes an alternative<br />

interpretation as ‘’pull out from under the arm<br />

a bird caught in hunting’. ‘Captivate’ may be<br />

seen as an extended sense, but views diverge<br />

as to whether ‘seize, deprive someone of<br />

something’ should be regarded as an extended<br />

sense or a loan use in relation to ‘bird<br />

flies off’. It appears to have been at the clerical<br />

script stage that was replaced by 920,<br />

also meaning ‘hand’; the substitution of <br />

‘hand’ for in this way was not uncommon.<br />
