with 辡 (‘be in dispute’; see Note below)<br />

giving ‘mottled pattern/colors’. Later, the<br />

phonetic element was changed from 辡 to<br />

(shortened form of (‘two sets of jade<br />

discs’: see 15). Note: 辡 has 1535 (‘sharp’)<br />

duplicated; the original meaning of being<br />

‘large tattooing needle’, used on foreheads<br />

of criminals and slaves to mark ownership.<br />

Shuowen defines 辡 as ‘criminals in dispute’.<br />
