bronze form corresponding to 竂 , consisting
of 860 ‘cave, hole’, taken to have in effect
the same meaning as 30 ‘roof, building’
on the basis that in ancient times people occupied
caves as dwellings; Katō takes (CO;
see 2092 Note) here as phonetic with associated
sense ‘gouge out’ and by extension
‘opening, window’ by further extension,
‘colleagues’ (those who share same space).
Ogawa, however, takes as combined with
as phonetic with associated sense ‘plan’,
giving ‘office for planning government matters’.
Another view (Gu), by contrast, treats
as a late graph, listed in Yupian (6 th century),
meaning ‘colleague, fellow official’; by
further extension, ‘(type of) building’. ‘Hostel,
dormitory’ is the specific sense for this graph
and ‘colleague’ is now conveyed by 2092.
