§. 5. The proprietors of this country firft ftiled themfelves Nobles of Hanau,
Reinhard, grandfon to Henr'j lord of Hanau, who lived about the year 1

obtained a part of the Munzenberg eftate with his wife Adelheida. Reinhard
II. was the firft count of Hanau, this dignity being conferred on him
and his heirs by the Emperor Sigifmwid in the year 1429. His youngeft

territories in it, tlie caftle town and prefedurate of Babenhaufen, acquired
alfo in the year 1481, a part of the lordlhip oi Lichtenberg, as his wife's
portion; the houfe oi Hanau became divided into the lines oi Munzeiiberg
and Lichtenberg. The former of thefe failed in the year 1642, the latter,
by virtue of a compad concluded in 16 10, fucceeded to the county of Hanau-Munzenberg,
and by the affiftance of Amelia Elizabeth, regent of Heß'-
Caffel, but a branch of the fl^wö« family, reunited the whole county, which
had been dilmembered from it in the wars of thofe times. In acknowlec^ement
of this good office, the Counts Frederick Cafimir, John Philip, and
John Reinhard, in the year 1 643 , entered into a convention with Hcffe-
CaJ/el, importing that on the failure of the male line of Hanau, the whole
county of Hanau-Munzenberg, together with the property thereof, fhould
devolve to the houfe of Hefe. But the reverfion of the Imperial fiefs of
Hanau having been granted to the houfe of Saxony, in the year 1625, by the
Emperor Ferdinand U. and renewed and confirmed by the fucceeding Emperors;
the two houfes, in 1724, came to a compromife that Saxcfjy {hon\d
cede to He/Je all its claim to the Imperial fiefs in Hanau-Munzejiberg, but
that in fuch a manner that Saxony fhould on certain occafions, petition for
and receive the fiefs from the Emperor, and afterwards invert the houfe of
Heje-Caß'el, but that on the failure of the male line of Hejfe-Caßl and Heffe-
Philipfdale, the Imperial fiefs of Hanau-Munzenberg fhould return to the
immediate lords, they on the other hand refunding to the heirs of Hejfe the
whole equivalent paid for it. This equivalent, exclufive of 70,000 ruthlr.
paid down at the fignature of the agreement, was on the fubfequent extindion
of the Hanau family fettled at 600,000 ruthlr. in ready fpecie, as
alfo a yearly revenue of 12,000 ruthlr. in lands and vafTals. In the year
1728, this agreement was confirmed by the Emperor Charles VI. In the
year 1735, Frederick King of S-weden, renounced the fuccefTion to Hanau-
