different parts have arifen. In the upper part, which ftands upon a mountain,
is the princely rt\\dtnCQ of Petersburg, built by B\{ho\-) Lctharius Fn^ncifcm,
in the year 1702 in a new and extenfive manner; as alfo the great
cathedral church of St. George, in which is to be found the monument of
King He'iry II. the founder of the bilhopric, and his confort Cunigwida, tcgether
with a confiderable treafure of relicks and jewels. In it likewife is
the cathedral of St. Stephen and St. "Jcunes, together with the grand and rich
Benedi£i'-ie cloyfler oi Monchsberg, and the nunnery of St. Theodore. In the
middle pirt of the town, which has a communication with the upper part bymeans
of a lofty flone-bridge, are many fine houfcs, as alfo the ancient
epilcopal palace of Gryerfioerth, together with a noble orangery, a fine
church of the Jefuits, who have the infpeiftion of the univerfity here,
which was founded under the title of Academia Ottonir.a, by Bifliop Melchior
O'. to, and was dedicated on Septaiiber i, 1648; the parifli-church
of St. Martin, that of St. Mary, three monalleries, two nunneries, and a
hofpital. A long and broad bridge leads from the middle part of the town
to the fuburbs of Treuerßadt, in which are to be feen the old fjundation of
St. Gangolph, and the Dominican nunnery of the holy fepulchre. The firfl
building of this town is placed in the year 804. In the years 984, 11 24,
1134, 1138, and 1 158, in it were held Diets of the Empire, and in
1644, 1645, and 1673, Diets of the circle oi Iranconia. The Emperor
Charlemagne removed fome Slavi to this place.
The old fort Hands upon a high mountain about half an hour's diftancc
from the town, being for the moft part in ruins.
Near the village of Seehof, which lies about one hour's difiance from
the town is the princely noble fummer-reiidence of Marquardsburg, which
is fo named from its builder Marquard Scbaßian Schenk, of Staufcnberg.
