Of the Marggravate of
E A A D E JV in general.
§. I. r\ F the marggravates of Baaden and Hochberg a very accurate map

§. 2. The marggravate oi Baaden lies on the eaftern fide of the Rhine
and is properly that traft of land betwixt the Pßnz and Schivarzbach, and
watered by the little rivers of Alb, Pfedderbach, Miirg, Saubach and Sulzbach,
all of which empty themfelves into the Rhine. The northern part
of this country, which lies betwixt the rivers Pßnz and Alb is called the
lower marggravate, or from the capital Durlach the marggravate of Baadcn-
Durlach, but all the reft the upper marggravate ; or from Baaden the capital
the marquifate of Baade?i-Baaden ; but to thefe marggraves belong alfo
other lands, which fliall be mentioned in the feque). Tlie whole marggravate
is a good country, abounding with corn, hemp, flax, bees-wax,
and wood.
§. 3. The Marggraves of Baaden are defcended from Herman II. fon to
Duke Berfholdl. of Zahringen, on whom was conferred the couniiv of i/(?erg. His fon Herman I. being faid to have taken upon him the original
title and arms of a Marggrave oi Baaden, that marggravate being the portion
of his fpoufe Judith, it is a common but miftaken notion that the title
of Hochberg was prior to that of Baaaen, The Marggrave Herjnan III. who
died in the year 1190, left behind him Herman IV. and Hnry. Of thefe
the latter founded the Hochberg line, which in the J4'th century was divided
into thofe of Hochberg and Saufen ;
but the Baaden Tne commenced in the
former. In the year 1503, the Marggrave Chrijhphcr of Baadern reunited
the two lines : But in his Tons Bernard and Erneß commenced two oth.r,
which ftill continue, viz. that of Baaden-Baaden and that of Baaden-
Durlach. The right of primogeniturefhip has long fince been introduced
in both, and religioufly obferved.
